[Character Study #6] Acrobat/”Hullabaloo” Mike Morton

I’m back with my next character study on Mr. Mike Morton. Just in time for his birthday! My last one was on Joker which was a bit of a doozy of a post as I was not all to familiar with his game. Really though, the more I thought about Joker’s backstory, the more I realize how awfully relatable he is in our own world that pushes such nice people to their absolute limits and turning them into something they never wanted to be.

Mike is quite similar to Joker in that way. Yet, how exactly? Well, let me fill you in, dear stranger, on the tale and analysis on the star acrobat of the Hullabaloo Circus.

Backstory: The Little Orphan Who Dreamed of the Stars

Mike was originally an orphan who was found and taken in by Bernard Morton, the ringmaster of the Hullabaloo Circus. Bernard seemed to take enough of a liking to Mike to train him to be the star acrobat despite the fact that it appears that role should have been given to Murro who was his nephew whose parents were the original owners of the circus before their untimely deaths. In addition, Joker also was at the circus before Mike and was a star performer in his own right. However, both would be pushed aside when Mike followed by Margaretha and Sergi arrived at the circus.

It was around this time when his relevancy was waning that Murro saw his chance to leave the circus and asked Mike for help. Mike obliged and helped Murro escape and wouldn’t see his brother until they met at the manor.

While they are not related by blood, the two saw each other as brothers. Though it was thanks to finding the favor of Bernard who became very proud of the boy’s talent and progress that would lead Mike to receiving the name “Morton.”

Unfortunately, while Mike was enjoying his time in the spotlight, things were not well for the rest of the Hullabaloo members. While Murro had escaped the cruelty and scorn of the circus, Joker, Margaretha, and Violetta would continue to face constant troubles that would only culminate into tragedy.

Unbeknownst to Mike (or really, overlooked by him), Margaretha was being terribly abused physically and verbally by Sergi. Joker found out and did his best to protect her from Sergi who he most likely confronted at one point. This led to Sergi stealing one of Mike’s acid bottles to use in Joker’s facial makeup leading the poor clown to ruin his face. It was this act that ruined Joker’s life and caused him to commit mass murder at the Hullabaloo one night, killing Sergi and Bernard in the process.

At the time, Mike was away running errands but when he returned and saw the ruins of his home and the bodies of the dead who he once called family, it became his sole mission to find the murderer that shattered his glow—his starlight.

Mike Morton: A Naive Seeker of Vengeance

I assume that most are familiar with Mike from The Closing Night story. As I said in Joker’s character study, I urge everyone to play or watch a video of the story before reading these analysis pieces since it helps provide a good framework to go on when reading this.

For me, the one thing that still sticks with me about Mike was my initial reaction to him and a friend’s acerbic viewpoint on him.

When I first played The Closing Night story, it was literally the very first night when I downloaded the game. I binged the whole story without knowing who these characters were. I just knew the story was interesting and it would fill the hole for more plot, more conflict, more intriguing mysteries that Ashes of Memory had left after I finished that story.

My initial impression of Mr. Mike Morton was a rather poor one. I didn’t really like his attitude towards the others especially Violetta in that one scene. His voice didn’t help either since to me it wasn’t really my cup of tea. All in all, he didn’t do much to exactly move me in the same way Violetta did. For someone who seemed hellbent on making out Margaretha as unpleasant and terrible, Mike acted quite the same, if not worse.

Yet, this is where I was wrong. When I went back to replay the story back a few months after I first played it, I had a better understanding of the Hullabaloo characters and their backstory. I ended up replaying the story on stream which was a little fortuitous because when it got to the scene of Mike yelling at Violetta, one of my regular chatters who loves her a lot, instantly declared they hated Mike over Joker.

Now, that caught my attention. Despite knowing full well that Joker would lead Violetta to her death, this chatter still expressed immense distaste towards Mike over Joker for that one scene. I was more curious, if not a little sad for Mike because I now saw what some others like past me and this chatter didn’t see.

_{I understand why a lot may have misgivings towards Mike in this scene after seeing Violetta’s reaction. But while it is difficult to be hard on such a character, we can’t allow ourselves to be so susceptible to her charms to overlook Mike’s own feelings and perspective.}

Let’s take a look at the dialogue of the scene:

Violetta: Moon River Massacre! That’s what they called that day. A lunatic slaughtered everyone! Everyone!

Did I frighten you, Murro? I was frightened too! Does that not prove my performance was utterly convincing? Just like the actors in the theater—I’ve watched their rehearsals, you know. The one playing the madman in a black robe, he was so… starts clapping excitedly

Mike: Enough, Violetta!

Violetta (visibly shaken): Alright, alright, I’ll say no more. I’ll leave now…It’s too dreadful…that madman…too dreadful…Mike..

Look, I can understand just exactly why Mike lost brownie points with a lot of people in this scene. Yet, you have to see it from his perspective to understand that he actually may have been perfectly justified in reacting the way he did.

First of all, Violetta comes bursting into the room in character as she recites her line from the playbill given to them by the manor owner. She is clearly into the performance which is all well and good if it wasn’t reality to Mike.

That massacre that she is so eagerly acting out was the whole reason Mike was at the manor in the first place. The day of the incident was the day Mike himself died. His family, his home as he knew it was gone completely and utterly stolen and destroyed by a murderer who he strongly suspected was amongst the ones gathered at the manor.

If you didn’t know, in Mike’s 6th letter from last year, we learn that after the massacre it was Mike who claimed all 16 bodies killed by the murderer. This included his dear adopted father, Bernard, who Mike idolized. If it wasn’t clear from the deduction above, Mike clearly loved Bernard. His very first deduction even states: “Family: He’s like a father; an ideal one.”

While we should all have our misgivings towards Bernard who I also dislike heavily, we can’t dismiss the fact that for Mike it would be difficult to throw away his cherished memories of his adoptive father even after learning the truth of the Hullabaloo Circus.

Back then, after claiming the bodies, Mike would still stay for a long time at the morgue going over the bodies again and again to count them again, look at their faces, and recite their names over and over again. Afterwards, he would go on to using up a lot of money to give them all a proper burial. He even had to borrow money from others because back then it was really expensive to bury anyone in a named plot with a proper headstone. And guess what? The grave with the biggest headstone was Bernard’s.

Perhaps there was a good amount of survivor’s guilt there too, but it shows how heavily Mike’s heart and soul connected to the Hullabaloo Circus and thus why he himself collapsed into ruin, never to be whole again, just like the circus.

This is why to Mike, when he sees Violetta acting in that scene, it triggered him. She was talking about the deaths of his family, his home, his very being as if it was some children’s story she delighted in.

Granted, we can’t be too harsh on Violetta. It sounds as if Bernard purchased her shortly before the massacre took place. This is backed up by the others’ reactions to her when she first meets them at Oletus Manor. Namely Margaretha’s reaction at the beginning of The Closing Night story as she struggles to remember Violetta’s name until the latter finishes it for her. Her backstory also mentions this:

“Accepting an invitation to ‘perform’ at Oletus Manor, she leaves the freak show as the newest member of another circus.”

It also makes it sound like she left right before the massacre as well. This would mean she really had no idea the weight of her words and performance on Mike who took it as well as a grieving vengeance-filled man could. Plus, he does apologize for his outburst a little later on and afterwards, he never lashes out her again. Sure, he gets antsy to ask her who hurt her when she is found outside in the snow with sawed off mechanical limbs but that is because Mike is sure he is so close to the killer he has been hunting for for years at this point.

And yet, that’s the thing about Mike. He’s not inherently a bad person either. This is where my comparison of Joker comes in. Neither of these two men were awful to begin with. They were both pushed to the brink of their limits. The main difference is, Joker was pushed over that limit because the world gave him so little back besides ridicule and derision. The one time he did his best to do a good act in helping Margaretha, he was punished severely for it.

Mike was always the golden boy of the Hullabaloo Circus. Bernard cherished him and despite Mike initially being suspected in the incident with Joker’s face since it was his acid that was found in the clown’s makeup, Mike was quickly dismissed of suspicion.

That’s perhaps the worst Mike got it. Though I do believe that it was thanks to how Bernard raised him that Mike turned a blind eye to the cruelties occurring at the circus. Under the dazzling lights and twinkling stars of the circus, Mike was always aware of the truth but never could accept it until there was no choice left.

Mike had to witness Violetta dying due to severe hypothermia, Margaretha choosing to jump into a river to her death, and Joker following after his beloved Natalie to the afterlife. This was too much for him and even if that meant leaving Murro behind, so be it. He felt that Murro would be well off regardless of rather Mike lived or not.

The Closing Night Identity Switch Debate: Mike or Violetta?

While I won’t go too in depth with Mike’s Hunter identity as that will be saved for a future Identity Switch piece, I can’t help but at least comment on a sentiment I saw months ago when I first played the game.

“It should’ve been Violetta who got the identity switch, not Mike.”

I saw this from someone who said they love Mike but didn’t understand why NetEase/Joker Studio would choose him over Violetta.

Simple. While an identity switch is given to characters for various personal reasons, the common theme is: change/transformation/revival.

By the way, have you ever heard of the concept of a dynamic character vs. a static character?

To put it simply, a dynamic character changes throughout their story. They go through arcs that causes them to grow as a person and while they don’t necessarily become a completely different person at the end of the story, the changes they go through are palpable to an outsider like you and me. On the other hand, static characters don’t change at all. They stay more or less the same throughout the story.

That’s the deal with Mike and Violetta. Even up to the moment of her death, Violetta remains the same. Why then would they have her become a survivor? There is not much more to explore with her character that wasn’t already accomplished through The Closing Night story.

And yes, I do understand some believe the developers are too lazy to create a different model for her as a survivor but even if this was the only reason Violetta didn’t get an identity switch, I can’t blame them necessarily especially in this day and age when we know the creative departments of Joker Studio are struggling.

_{Interestingly though, it is said “Prodigy” will be getting a different model compared to the current survivor roster but naturally, Kai is a different story. I got this info from the COA IX Grand Finals, so let’s see if Kai actually does look a little different from everyone else.}

Granted, some also believe the developers messed up on making her a hunter in the first place instead of a survivor. This, I kind of agree with because I remember being severely confused when I first played the story on how this sweet misguided spider lady could be a hunter. But as we know, it doesn’t really matter how nice you are, you can still become a hunter. Look at Robbie. Look at Grace. Heck, I could even say Emil now that we know he’s becoming a hunter.

It’s a matter of perspective and I think in Violetta’s case, it’s partially Margaretha’s fault.

But I’ve digressed too much. This is Mike’s post and I want to keep it as such. Violetta will have her turn. I just wanted to add this here since I felt it needed to be said now as opposed to waiting for Mike’s Identity Switch post.

“If a Star Were to Shatter, Would It Still Glow?”

This particular quote is something that has stuck with me when it comes to Mike. It’s a simple quote but I love it. A simple question in which I feel the answer isn’t clear. It feels vaguely out of reach just…well, just like a star. We visibly see it afar with our eyes but even through telescopes, it’ll always be far far away despite feeling so close.

Mike was the prince of the Hullabaloo Circus who had stars in his eyes. He dazzled the crowd with his nitrate bombs and shining performance. He wanted to create a spectacle. Fireworks to alight in the sky to move the crowd with joy and glee. He genuinely wished to perform with his family within the sanctuary of his home forever and ever.

While Mike grew a disgust towards Margaretha, grew suspicious of Joker, possibly held some misgivings towards Murro for wanting to leave, and possibly thought of Violetta as too naive and new, I think at the end of the day, his frustrations and anger towards them came from a place of wishing they could just be one big happy family. Why couldn’t they understand that? Why didn’t they see the Hullabaloo as home like him? Thoughts like that were probably going round and round his head over the years. Even when he found out the truth from Joker, Mike still refused to believe that his beloved home was a place only he cherished and wished to return to.

Those stars that once dazzled the crowd and helped him believe he could reach the sky, were his rose-colored glasses and once they shattered, Mike was forced to face the truth, really face it to the point he had to accept. When he did, Mike’s very essence collapsed.

The prince who lives on the star
asked the sun in the sky,
“Do you see the fireworks?
They light up so high.
They’re as beautiful as illusions,
so could you please not rise?”

The king asked: “What do you see?”
The prince said “Stars”; jester said: “Flames.”
The king asked: “What do you hear?”
Prince said: “Laugh sounds so clear.”

I once again want to mention the music of The Closing Night story. I will only include the lyrics of “Hullabaloo” this time because I really do love the allusions of the song with the characters of the circus.

Mike is clearly the prince and it’s awfully sad reading the lyrics of the prince who presumably lights up the sky all on his own. Because he knows when the sun rises, the beautiful illusion he wants to preserve will vanish and the secrets and dark truths will return with the shadows of the day. The sun could also stand for Joker since I made mention in his own character study that his costume tied to The Closing Night is called, “The Extinguished Sun” and in “The Cursed Sun,” the sun is to blame for the fifth child (Violetta) “passing out.” It could be the sun is supposed to be an allusion to the killer of the Hullabaloo massacre.

Regardless, it is more clear that the king mentioned is Bernard who hears the prince reply how he still sees the stars and hears laughter, oh so clearly.

Mike was the only member of the Hullabaloo Circus to live on in the memories of its glory days. He faced this truth amongst other dark truths he buried deep within him. While he succumbed to his despair and blew himself up along with the replica of the circus, did his star truly stop glowing?

For me, I fear it burned the brightest with his demise. Just like his final performance. The fireworks dissipated into the night air, not as ashes but as stardust joining their just as bright brothers and sisters as stars in the sky.

Because unfortunately, one’s story can only shine at its brightest with their life’s end. Yet, that also means that his star still glows in each and every one of us that knows his story since he and the Hullabaloo Circus lives on in a way. I would hope that would give Mike some solace in the end.
